Davidson Program for Independence

Junior Blind’s Davidson Program for Independence is a comprehensive residential program designed to help adults who are blind or visually impaired. Through training in four core areas: Braille, Assistive Technology Skills, Orientation and Mobility and Independent Living Skills, such as cooking, cleaning and money management, graduates of the program attain the skills to find employment and enjoy productive and fulfilling lives in their homes, communities and places of work.

Who We Serve

The Davidson Program for Independence serves adults, ages 18 and older, who are blind or visually impaired and want to achieve greater independence in the home, community and workplace. Our program is individualized and designed to meet the needs of all ages and skill levels.

Our Staff

The Davidson Program for Independence is made up of a team of seasoned professionals in the field of blindness. Students receive training from experienced instructors who specialize in Orientation and Mobility, Independent Living, Braille and Assistive Computer Technology.

Program Features

  • A comprehensive five-to-six month residential training program
  • Individualized Orientation and Mobility training to help ensure safe travel in the community, including white cane skills, crossing streets and using public transportation
  • Two fully-equipped training apartments for in-depth living skills development Comprehensive Braille instruction in reading and writing; full access to Braille Library
  • State-of-the-art computer technology center equipped with cutting-edge assistive technology
  • Career exploration curriculum including interviewing skills, dress for success and resume writing
  • Adjustment counseling for individuals, groups and families
  • Gymnasium, fitness room, swimming pool, jacuzzi and bowling alley for recreational enjoyment

Referral Procedure

A student may be referred to the Davidson Program for Independence by the Department of Rehabilitation, family member, healthcare or blindness professional.
